about

The 6 tracks of this album take the listener on a journey through a series of episodes that feel simultaneously alien and familiar. From the pulsing invocation of Hamsa Calls, through the tense, mysterious soundscapes of the central pieces, to the pastoral conclusion of the title track, Red Knot Returns presents a story of an adventurer who is called to leave the comforts of the familiar, who seeks equanimity in the face of boredom, fear, and discomfort, and who returns home with a wiser, yet lighter, heart.

Following the innovations of West Coast composers such as Terry Riley and Lou Harrison, as well as Fourth World pioneers Brian Eno and Jon Hassell, Hawsepiper’s music finds inspiration in the complex rhythms and expressive melodicism of various Asian and African musical traditions, the emergent forms of Minimalism, the freedom of modal jazz improvisation, and the limitless possibilities of digital sound transformation. The rhythmic foundation emerges from undulating drones and slowly morphing loops interweaved with sparse percussion and bass figures. Long tones from harmonized flute and melismatic viola figures narrate the story, while spectral chord clusters from bowed vibraphone and swirling electronic tones create atmospheres which move between tension, mystery and serenity.

about

Hawsepiper Oakland, California

Hawsepiper hopes to craft music that points us towards a place of possibility, where past and future, exotic and familiar, merge into pure experience.

In nautical parlance, a hawsepiper is an officer who has made his way up from the bottom of the ranks without formal training. The name Hawsepiper implies both the excitement of adventure, and the struggles of finding one’s place in the world.
